Therapy for Worriers and Overthinkers

Go from Feeling Frazzled to Calm and Centered

What If…

If you identify as a worrier and overthinker then you know what it’s like to have a constant to do list running in your mind. You’re known as someone who always has Plan A, B, & C (and, let’s be real, probably even more).

This can be a good trait to have so let’s admire for a moment how this tendency can help you be really organized, prepared, and excel at taking care of things that need to get done. Whatever role you have in your life, you are probably quite good at it, but at what personal cost?

The Cost…

The downside of operating from this place all the time, unable to shut it off, is that you don’t know how to relax and might suffer from headaches, body tension, stomachaches, and poor sleep to name a few common effects. You might even bite your nails down to the skin, chew on your lips, or skin in your mouth and experience tension and pain in your jaw from teeth clenching. However the excess stress and overwhelm shows up for you, it’s not comfortable or sustainable for the long term.

You likely think of things as all good or bad (or right & wrong) and others may not know how stressed you are but inside, you always feel keyed up and on edge. When things don’t go as planned, it can really set you off into a downward spiral where you start to think and feel all types of negative things about yourself and others and it can be hard to get out of that place. You might become irritable, angry, and quick to snap at others in your life. When it’s really bad, you might even just want to shut down.

Is Too Great?

All of this can really take a toll on your own well-being as well as your relationships with your loved ones and friends. This is typically what people think of when they hear the word anxiety. That word brings to mind someone who worries and can’t relax but it’s more than that, it’s a pervasive inability to just be in the moment and truly engage and connect with your life because you can’t stop thinking about what’s next. Have you paid attention to your breath lately? If you pause now and do so, you’ll likely notice that it's shallow and not reaching to your lower belly.

Constantly Doing

You’ve probably heard about the idea of “being present” but have no idea what that even means or looks like. Just sitting down and doing nothing for awhile might even make you feel anxious showing up with restlessness & fidgeting or might even bring up symptoms of panic like having a racing heart and shortness of breath because it’s something so unfamiliar to your body. Maybe you never even make time to just be because it is so uncomfortable, or you don’t even know how to anymore. You might even feel like you have to “earn” a break by getting so much done in a day before you can have permission to enjoy some down time.
